SPEAKeasy Unveils Nashville First: Pickers Vodka

SPEAKeasy Spirits Distillery, an artisan distillery located in the historic West Town neighborhood, unveiled details about its soon-to-be-released vodka. Pickers will be Nashville’s first craft vodka made in a state-of-the-art column still, resulting in a product with a level of purity and smoothness that Nashvillians can be proud of.

Already known for its award-winning Whisper Creek Tennessee Sipping Cream and Pennington’s Strawberry Rye Whiskey, SPEAKeasy will launch three versions of its vodka: Pickers Original Vodka, Pickers Blueberry Vodka and Pickers Blood Orange Vodka.

Launching in April, each expression will be available in 50 mL, 750 mL, 1L and 1.75L bottles. Pickers Vodka is made with non-GMO Tennessee white corn and is gluten free. Pickers Vodka will be distributed locally by Best Brands, Inc.

“Our team is incredibly excited to have been chosen to distribute Pickers Vodka,” said Seth Eskind, president of Best Brands, Inc. “When we tasted each of the Pickers Vodka variations, we were blown away by the quality and drinkability. SPEAKeasy has created an exceptional product that is going to compliment Nashville’s lifestyle”

“Our goal for Pickers is to create a premium product worthy of being called Nashville’s vodka,” said SPEAKeasy co-founder, Jeff Pennington. “Pickers is a tribute to our hometown, Nashville, and everything it represents from the people, to the nightlife, to the musicians whose sounds fill the air.”

SPEAKeasy flavored its vodkas entirely with real fruit juice and extracts. The distillery was able to work with one of the only blood orange suppliers in the nation to get real, California-grown blood orange juice sourced for its vodka.

“The first thing you’ll notice when you taste Pickers Blueberry and Blood Orange is that it is made using real fruit, which produces a light pulp and vibrant color in the vodka. The nose is bursting with fruit flavors,” said SPEAKeasy co-founder, Jenny Pennington. “The same notes linger on the pallet giving way to a well-balanced finish. The real fruit Pickers flavors are great when mixed with simple ingredients such as club soda since the vodka itself is providing flavor and a hint of sweetness you would normally add using a flavored mixer.”

The column still installed last month by SPEAKeasy to produce Pickers is one of only four like it in the country. Column stills used for vodka production contain a series of metal plates, each increasingly purifies the vodka as it is distilled. SPEAKeasy’s still contains the equivalent of two to three times more plates than other stills used for vodka production. Furthermore, the temperature inside the still can be controlled within one-half of one degree Fahrenheit, further improving the purity of Pickers Vodka.

“Our state-of-the-art column still allows us to remove impurities that can otherwise be difficult to refine,” said Jeff. “Creating a great vodka is about making a pure product and with Pickers, this truly shows.”

“Pickers is crafted with great precision and you can taste it,” added Jenny. “From the packaging to the vodka itself, we have obsessed over every detail to deliver a brand that Nashville can be proud to call its own.”

Nashville Distillery Adds Partner, Gears Up for Vodka Production

SPEAKeasy Spirits Distillery continues growth, welcomes partner and installs Nashville’s first column still for vodka production

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (February 11, 2015) – SPEAKeasy Spirits Distillery, an artisan distillery in the historic West Town neighborhood, has welcomed a new business partner and installed Nashville’s only column still to be used exclusively for crafting vodka.

Founded by spirits specialists Jeff and Jenny Pennington, SPEAKeasy Spirits Distillery’s brands include award-winning Whisper Creek Tennessee Sipping Cream and Pennington’s Strawberry Rye Whiskey. The company added industry veteran Tommy Bernard as a business partner, which enabled the investment in a state-of-the-art column still designed explicitly to produce high quality, incredibly pure vodka. The still will soon be operational and the first batches are expected to be available in April 2015. It will be distributed by Best Brands, Inc.

“Great vodka is pure and we’ve invested in a column still designed specifically to create the purest vodka possible—there are only three other stills like it in the U.S.,” said Jeff Pennington. “In the last year, we’ve experienced tremendous growth and are excited about the opportunities to expand our capacity and products. With our vodka, we will continue our same passionate pursuit of crafting exceptional products that have a character distinctive from anything else in the marketplace.”

The 22-foot-tall, 5,000 pound still is the first dedicated vodka still in Tennessee. Metal plates within column stills condense and purify alcohol during distillation. While most stills used for vodka production contain 20 to 30 of these plates, SPEAKeasy Spirits Distillery’s new still has the equivalent of 48 plates.

The investment in the column still is made possible through the addition of a new business partner, Tommy Bernard. A veteran of the spirits industry, Bernard was the long-time president of Horizon Wine & Spirits Inc., Tennessee’s largest distributor of beverage alcohol products. He sold Horizon Wine & Spirits in 2010 to Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Bernard was drawn out of retirement by the innovation and quality exhibited by SPEAKeasy Spirits Distillery’s products.

“Jeff and Jenny have a keen intuition for what makes a product great, which is evident with Whisper Creek,” said Bernard. "When I saw the potential to develop brands that could be synonymous with Nashville, I wanted to be involved."

SPEAKeasy Spirits Distillery’s signature product, Whisper Creek Tennessee Sipping Cream, the first sipping cream of its kind, is experiencing rapid sales growth. Whisper Creek is made with premium-aged, charcoal-mellowed Tennessee whiskey and distinctly Southern flavors like pecan, fig and red apple.

“SPEAKeasy Spirits Distillery is excited about the growth 2014 brought, what 2015 has in store and the products we have in the hopper for the years to come, including whiskey we’re patiently watch age,” said Jenny Pennington. “A lot of exciting details about our vodka will be available in just a few weeks.”

SPEAKeasy Spirits announces new partnership

One of the spirit industry’s most successful and respected veterans has joined Jeff and Jenny Pennington of SPEAKeasy Spirits to fuel their rapidly growing business. Industry leader Tommy Bernard has provided financial capital and will be lending support, expertise and his relationship-based approach to the young couple in Nashville, TN. They’ve shown remarkable progress with initial offerings from a 2-year old start up. Currently holding the brands Whisper Creek and aptly named Pennington’s, SPEAKeasy Spirits has been one of the most talked about launches at industry trade shows as well as on the retail floor. The concept is fresh, the energy undeniable and the taste on point.

After a remarkable run and sell of Horizon Wine and Spirits, Bernard worked out his agreement with expected action to be retirement. But, the whiz and spirit industry trendsetter is far from putting his knowledge on a shelf after successfully transitioning his company over to the new ownership. Instead, he pursued the chance to be involved with a bootstrapping, sipping whiskey making duo climbing the charts beyond the city of Nashville.  The lucrative element of potential earnings was a motivator, but his interest was much deeper.

Bernard has experience in working with numerous spirits brands throughout his 30+ years in the industry. He saw promise in SPEAKeasy Spirits not only because for the quality and impressive sales numbers, but for those behind it. Jeff Pennington worked for Bernard at Horizon fresh out of college and was a trailblazer in building relationships and enterprise for the distributor.

Jeff started working for me out of college and learned the spirits business from the street level. I’m excited to work with him again and to be a part of growing SPEAKeasy Spirits into Tennessee’s premier craft distillery.
— Tommy Bernard

Combined with the strengths of his wife and partner, Jenny Pennington (with a background at Middle Tennessee distributor, Best Brands), the chemistry is unstoppable. Known for innovative but smart alliances, Bernard courted this young couple, even though they had resisted other partners and offers.

They respect and value Bernard’s wisdom and friendship, which is why they elected to not only accept his capital infusion, but to forge a true partnership. The immediate, primary focus is creating, producing and distributing stellar whiskey from Tennessee. Quality is the most important factor in developing the whiskey, and with the appropriate backing now available, there will be adequate time and dollars to ensure every step of the process is perfect.  While the spirit is properly aging, the team will be working on current brands, new skews and marketing campaigns. They intend to design and build a state-of-the-art distillery in a dynamic location, which will be a tribute to the city of Nashville, a cherished community asset for locals and prized destination for tourists.

Based on what the Pennington’s already have on paper (and in 33 states across the US, Canada and Mexico) with award-winning Whisper Creek and the new Pennington’s Strawberry Rye Whiskey, this new partnership is full of promise. All production will be of the highest quality and orchestrated by this team that knows, appreciates and understands distributors, retailers and most importantly their consumer base. They will continue to assist various brands with custom label product, which has been an important part of their growth and survival to date.

Supply will be the biggest challenge, as orders from distributors across North America have created quite a demand for their Tennessee Sipping Cream, Whisper Creek. This new partnership, staffing and marketing funds will only further capabilities and consumer awareness. The Pennington’s are full of fire and enthusiasm, spreading their cheer and inventive packaging at events on a personal level that is rare in any industry. The Pennington’s attitudes and presentation have created a stir at industry trade shows, and with Bernard’s personal relationships and guidance, the future holds great promise for this craft distillery and their vendor partners.
